A 57-year old Sureshbhai Patel from India was visiting his family in Madison, Al.
He was taking a walk around his family’s neighborhood in the area of Huntsville, before he was tackled to the ground by Alabama police.
There were two cops, Officer Eric Parker and a trainee, Officer Adrew Slaughter. They got a call from a neighbor that said there is a “skinny black guy with suspicious behavior”. So they walked up to Patel and asked him where he lives, even though it was obvious this man doesn’t speak English.
Poor grandpa tried to explain by pointing and even walking to the direction where his family lives. The next thing, he was brutally slammed to the ground and handcuffed, and left with spine injuries and paralyzed left leg.
Sureshbhai Patel filed a federal lawsuit through an attorney, for violation of his human rights.
Eric Parker is accused of recklessly causing physical injury to another person, and Hank Sherrod, the family lawyer, also gave a health update on Patel’s condition: “His grip strength is improving, though he can’t yet handle small objects (like a spoon). His legs are improving, too, particularly his right leg. The doctors attribute the improvement to Mr. Patel’s hard work and motivation.”
Madison Police Chef Larry Muncey apologized to brutally assaulted Mr. Patel and his family.
Even Robert Bentley, the Governor of Alabama, has officially apologized to Indian government in a letter that was made public:
“Sincere apology for this tragic incident to your government, Mr Patel, and the citizens of India who reside and work in our state… I deeply regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Department … and for the injuries sustained by Mr Patel,” wrote Mr Bentley.
